Rack and Pinion Actuators

A rack and pinion actuator is a mechanical actuator that will turn a valve stem by 90 or 180 degrees. Rack and pinion actuators are operated either by hydraulic cylinders or by electric motors. Hydraulic operated rack and pinion actuators can be either double acting, two cylinders, or single acting with a spring return.

Rack and Pinion Actuators are required for the following types of valves:

  • Ball Valves
  • Butterfly Valves
  • Plug Valves

One of the most crucial criteria in sizing a rack and pinion actuator is determining the required torque needed to open or close a valve under process conditions. If it is undersized, the actuator will stall; if it is oversized, the valve may open or close too fast.
